Greatwood is a community that is now part of the city of Sugar Land in Texas, United States. It used to be a special area called a "census-designated place" in Fort Bend County. In 2010, about 11,538 people lived there. Greatwood officially became part of Sugar Land on December 12, 2017.

History of Greatwood

Development of Greatwood began in 1989 by a company called American General. Later, Newland Communities took over the building process. By 2008, most of Greatwood was fully built.

In November 2016, the city council of Sugar Land decided that Greatwood and another area called New Territory would become part of Sugar Land. This change officially happened on December 12, 2017.

Greatwood is located in the eastern part of Fort Bend County. It is near Interstate 69 and U.S. Route 59. The community is also south of the Brazos River.

The area has two main waterways: Rabbs Bayou and Middle Bayou. Both of these are "channelized," meaning their paths have been changed by people.

Greatwood covers about 7.1 square kilometers (2.7 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water. Greatwood is home to 4,167 houses spread across 29 neighborhoods.

Population and People

In 2010, the population of Greatwood was 11,538 people. This was a big increase from 6,640 people in 2000.

In 2000, there were 2,250 households in Greatwood. Most of these households (86.1%) were married couples living together. About 50.9% of households had children under 18 living with them.

The average household had about 2.94 people. The average family had about 3.10 people.

The population was spread out by age:

  • About 30.8% were under 18 years old.
  • About 39.6% were between 25 and 44 years old.
  • About 22.9% were between 45 and 64 years old.
  • About 4.4% were 65 years or older.

The average age in Greatwood was 35 years.

Students living in Greatwood attend schools within the Lamar Consolidated Independent School District (LCISD).

LCISD also built a middle school and a high school south of Greatwood to serve the community. These schools are:

  • Reading Junior High School
  • George Ranch High School

Before George Ranch High School opened, students from Greatwood went to Lamar Consolidated High School.

In 2009, LCISD made a plan to move some students from Campbell Elementary to Dickinson Elementary to help balance the number of students at each school.

For college, the Texas Legislature has named Wharton County Junior College as the college for Sugar Land and the LCISD area.

Parks and Recreation

Greatwood has many places for fun and activities! There are 12 community parks throughout the area. These parks offer:

  • Swimming pools
  • Clubhouses for community events

There is also a privately run public golf course in Greatwood.
