The "Han Shot First" Debate
The scene where Han Solo and Greedo meet has caused a lot of discussion among Star Wars fans. This is known as the "Han shot first" controversy.
The director, George Lucas, changed the scene several times. He felt that in the original movie, Han Solo seemed like a "cold-blooded killer." Han is a main character, and Lucas wanted him to be more of a hero.
Changes to the Scene
- 1997 Special Edition: For this re-release, Lucas changed the scene so that Greedo shoots first at Han, but misses. Then, Han shoots back and kills Greedo.
- 2004 DVD Release: The scene was changed again. This time, both Han and Greedo shoot at almost the same moment. Han also seems to dodge Greedo's shot.
- 2019 Disney+ Version: In the version released on Disney+, Greedo says a new line, "maclunkey," before shooting. This line might be a threat in the Huttese language. Also, the shot of Greedo being hit was removed.
Why Fans Disagreed
Many fans did not like these changes. They felt that altering the scene changed Han's character. In the original movie, Han was a bit rough around the edges. This made his journey from a less heroic character to a true hero feel more important. Lucas, however, said that Greedo was always meant to shoot first, and the changes were just to make it clearer.
