History of Greeley
Greeley was officially planned and mapped out in 1855. It was named after Horace Greeley, a famous newspaper editor. The town grew quite a bit in the 1870s. This happened when the Davenport and St. Paul Railroad built its tracks through the area.
The Powertrain Tug of War Team
Greeley is also known as the home of the "Powertrain" Tug of War team. This team started around the 1970s. They have traveled all over the world to compete against other international teams. The Powertrain team has even represented the USA in competitions for many years. Recently, they competed in the Tug of War World Cup in Switzerland.

Windfarm Project
A large windfarm was built mainly to the west of Greeley in 2011. This windfarm can produce 41 Megawatts (MW) of electricity. It is called the Elk windfarm and is owned by a company called RPM Access.
The windfarm has 17 large Nordex 2.5 MW turbines. These turbines are placed on tall towers that are about 100 meters (328 feet) high. The Central Iowa Power Cooperative buys the electricity made by this project. They then send this power to their member cooperatives for use.
