Greenland Pier is a special stopping place for boats on the River Thames in London, United Kingdom. It's found at the eastern end of a large water area called Greenland Dock. This pier is in an area of London known as the London Borough of Southwark.
It's a popular stop for a fast boat service that helps people travel around London by river. These boats are like buses, but they travel on water!
River Bus Services
Greenland Pier is a key stop for the river bus service, which uses speedy boats called catamarans. These boats are run by a company called Thames Clipper.
The boats travel along the River Thames, connecting many important places. You can catch a boat from Greenland Pier to places like Embankment, Tower Millennium Pier, Canary Wharf, Greenwich, and even the O2 arena. The service also goes further east to Woolwich Arsenal Pier. It's a great way to see London and get around!
Who Owns the Pier?
For a while, there were worries that Greenland Pier might close down. This was because it needed a lot of repairs and upkeep.
Before the London 2012 Olympic Games, there was a plan to fix up the pier. However, the local government, Southwark Council, couldn't find enough money for the repairs. They even announced that the pier would close on March 16, 2012.
Luckily, the company that runs the river buses, Thames Clippers, stepped in. They talked with Southwark Council and decided to buy the pier themselves! Now, Thames Clippers is in charge of keeping the pier in good condition. This means the river bus service can keep running from Greenland Pier.
