Greenwich Pier is a busy spot on the south side of the River Thames in Greenwich, London. It was built a long time ago, in 1836, to welcome many paddle steamers. These boats brought visitors from London for fun day trips to Greenwich. Back then, Greenwich was considered quite far from the main city!
Today, London River Services manages the pier. It's a popular place for different boat companies to pick up and drop off passengers. You can catch river buses and tourist cruises here. The pier is right next to the famous Cutty Sark ship and close to many other cool places to visit. The pier was updated in March 2018 to make it even better for visitors.
Boats and Services at Greenwich Pier
Greenwich Pier is a major stop for several boat companies. They offer different ways to travel and see London from the river:
- Thames Clipper: This service uses fast catamarans. It's like a river bus for commuters and visitors. You can travel between Greenwich and Central London, stopping at places like Embankment, Tower, and Canary Wharf. This service also goes further down the river to the O2 and Woolwich Arsenal Pier.
- Thames River Services: This company offers sightseeing tours. Their boats travel between Westminster Millennium Pier, St. Katharine Pier, and the amazing Thames Flood Barrier. Tours to the Thames Barrier usually run from April to October.
- City Cruises: This service also runs tourist cruises. You can hop on a boat and see famous landmarks from the river, with stops at Westminster, Waterloo, and Tower piers.
- Viscount Cruises: This company (formerly Campion Launches) offers special sightseeing cruises. They usually run on Sunday evenings from Greenwich Pier during the warmer months, from May to September.
