History
Michigan and the old Northwest Territory were once divided into square areas. These were called geographic townships, each about 36 square miles. Greenland Township is much larger than this. It is also shaped differently. This is because of the mountains and fewer people living there. The township's borders were drawn to help connect communities. This made it easier for people to reach their county seats.
In the 1920s, copper mines were very important in Greenland Township. Railroads like the Copper Range Railroad helped transport the copper. This led to many communities growing in the area. Some of these places included Greenland, Lake Mine, and Mass City. Other communities were McKeever, Peppard, Riddle Junction, and Simar. These towns were all connected by the busy railroad lines.
Geography
Greenland Township covers a total area of about 113.19 square miles. All of this area is land. The township is located in a beautiful part of Michigan.
