Greg Trooper (born January 13, 1956 – died January 15, 2017) was an American musician. He was known for writing and singing his own songs. Many famous artists, like Steve Earle and Billy Bragg, have recorded his music.
Early life and beginnings
Greg Trooper was born in Neptune Township, New Jersey. He grew up in a nearby town called Little Silver. Later, he studied at the University of Kansas.
Music career
In the 1980s, Greg moved to New York City. There, he started his own group called The Greg Trooper Band. The band included Larry Campbell on guitar.
Greg recorded his first two albums during this time. One of them, Everywhere, was very popular with music critics. His songs caught the attention of famous singer Steve Earle. Steve Earle even recorded one of Greg's songs called "Little Sister."
In the early 1990s, Greg met Garry Tallent. Garry was the bass player for the famous E Street Band. Like Greg, Garry also moved to Nashville, Tennessee. Garry helped Greg by producing his 1996 album, Noises in the Hallway. This album was released on Garry's own record label.
Greg continued to release more albums. In 1998, he released Popular Demons, which was produced by Buddy Miller. He later signed with another record company in Nashville.
Later life
Greg Trooper passed away on January 15, 2017. He was 61 years old.
