Greta Conway Van Susteren (born June 11, 1954) is an American journalist and television news anchor. She has worked for major news channels like CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, and now Newsmax TV.
Greta hosted On the Record w/ Greta Van Susteren on Fox News for 14 years. After that, she moved to MSNBC and hosted For the Record with Greta. Since June 2022, she has been hosting The Record with Greta Van Susteren on Newsmax. Before becoming a news anchor, she was a lawyer. She also worked as a legal expert on CNN, co-hosting a show called Burden of Proof. In 2016, Forbes magazine listed her as one of the most powerful women in the world.
Early Life and Education
Greta Van Susteren was born in Appleton, Wisconsin. Her father, Urban Van Susteren, was a judge. Her mother, Margery Conway, was a homemaker.
Greta has a sister named Lise, who is a forensic psychiatrist. Her brother, Dirk Van Susteren, was also a journalist.
Greta graduated from Xavier High School in 1972. She then went to the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where she studied geography and economics. Later, she earned a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1979. She also taught law at Georgetown before starting her television career.
Career in Television News
Greta Van Susteren began her television career as a legal analyst. She often appeared on CNN to discuss legal cases, like the famous O. J. Simpson murder trial. This led her to co-host CNN shows such as Burden of Proof and The Point.
In 2002, Greta joined the Fox News Channel. There, she hosted a news show called On the Record w/ Greta Van Susteren. She stayed with Fox News for 14 years.
On September 6, 2016, Greta left Fox News. She explained that it hadn't felt like home for a few years. She had a special part in her contract that allowed her to leave quickly.
In early 2017, Greta joined NBC News and hosted For the Record with Greta on MSNBC. However, she left MSNBC in June 2017.
Later, in October 2017, Greta became a contributor for Voice of America. In 2019, she joined Gray Television, a large group of TV stations. She worked as their chief national political analyst. She also launched a Sunday morning talk show called Full Court Press with Greta Van Susteren.
In May 2022, it was announced that Greta Van Susteren would join Newsmax TV. She started hosting The Record with Greta Van Susteren on June 14, 2022.
Personal Life
Greta Van Susteren married lawyer John P. Coale in 1988. She is a Scientologist.
Greta is also on the board of directors for the National Institute for Civil Discourse (NICD). This group was created to encourage respectful discussions. In 2018, she spoke to Congress about human rights abuses against the Rohingya people in Myanmar.
