Grethe Kausland (born Grethe Nilsen; 3 July 1947 – 16 November 2007) was a famous Norwegian singer, performer, and actress. She started her career as a child star and quickly became one of Norway's most loved singers. Her very first song, "Teddyen min" from 1955, sold over 100,000 copies!

Grethe also appeared in several movies when she was young. Later, she represented Norway in the Eurovision Song Contest in 1972. She sang the song "Småting" with Benny Borg. From 1973, she often performed with the popular comedy group Dizzie Tunes. She won several awards, including "Spellemannprisen" in 1978 for her album A Taste of Grethe Kausland. She also received the "Leonardstatuetten" in 1991 for her amazing work in stage shows. Grethe Kausland passed away in Oslo, Norway, on 16 November 2007, after an illness.

Grethe's Early Career as a Child Star

Grethe Kausland began performing at a very young age. She made her first stage appearance at just four years old in a local show. Her singing career took off when she was eight. In 1955, she won a singing competition on the radio.

After winning, she recorded her first song, "Teddyen Min." This song, along with "Cowboyhelten," became a huge hit on the radio. It sold more than 100,000 copies, which was a lot back then! By the time she was 12, Grethe had already recorded ten songs and acted in five movies. Even as a child, she loved jazz music and would visit jazz clubs. She sang jazz songs like an adult, even with her young voice.

Working with Dizzie Tunes

Grethe Kausland started working with the famous show group Dizzie Tunes in 1973. Their first show together was called På go'fot at the Chat Noir Theatre. They performed in many popular shows after that. These included Showkade med og uten fyll (1974) and Vi spillopper (1976).

They also made a film version of Vi spillopper in 1979. Other successful shows were Memories Of Music (1979/1980) and The Show Must Go Home (1984). Grethe also appeared in many of their TV shows. One of their TV shows, Sing Sala Bim (1973), won a Bronze Rose award at the Montreux festival.

A Star is Torn Stage Show

In 1993, Grethe Kausland starred in a special show called A Star is Torn. This show was based on an original play by Robyn Archer and Rodney Fischer. In this one-woman performance, Grethe played nine different famous female singers. Each singer had a sad story.

She portrayed legends like Bessie Smith, Judy Garland, Billie Holiday, and Edith Piaf. She also played Marilyn Monroe and Janis Joplin. Grethe performed this show first at the Rogaland Teater in Stavanger. She did 45 performances there. Later, she brought the show to the Victoria Teater in Oslo in 1995.

Grethe's Television Roles

From the late 1990s, Grethe Kausland appeared in several popular TV series. In 1996, she played "Vera" in the show D'ække bare, bare Bernt. Her husband in the show was "Bernt," played by Jon Skolmen. She was also a regular on the situation comedy Karl & Co. This show ran from 1998 to 2001, and Grethe played "Ruth Frantzen" in 63 episodes.

In 1999, she took on the role of "Mamsen" in the children's series Jul i Blåfjell. This series became very popular. It won the Gullruten award in 2000 for Best TV drama. A music album from the series also won a Spellemannprisen in 1999 for Best children's album. A follow-up series, Jul på månetoppen, came out in 2002.

Personal Life

Grethe Kausland was married to jazz guitarist Halvard Kausland from 1966 to 1979. Even after their marriage ended, she chose to keep the name Kausland instead of going back to her birth name, Nilsen.
