Greymouth Airport (codes: GMN, NZGM) is a small airport located in Blaketown. This area is a suburb just south of Greymouth town center. The airport is on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island.
It is an "uncontrolled" airport, meaning it does not have air traffic controllers. This airport is mainly used by small planes.

A Look at Past Flights
In the past, Greymouth Airport had regular commercial flights. Air West Coast started flying from here on November 8, 2002. They offered direct flights to Westport, then on to Wellington and Christchurch.
Another airline, Coast Air, also used to fly from Greymouth. From 1986 to 1988, they had daily flights. These flights went to Christchurch and Nelson.
Why Did Flights Stop?
Air West Coast stopped its services on August 1, 2008. This was mainly because of high costs. There was also strong competition from bigger airlines like Air New Zealand.
What Happens at the Airport Today?
Today, Greymouth Airport does not have any regular scheduled flights. However, you can still arrange special flights. Air West Coast offers charter flights.
One popular charter flight takes passengers from the TranzAlpine train. They fly from Greymouth station back to Christchurch. This flight offers amazing views of Mount Cook and the glaciers.
