Early Life and Art Journey
Griffon Ramsey grew up in Oregon. She was inspired by the wood carvings she saw as a child, including those made by her own grandfather. She started chainsaw sculpting in 2011. Her first chainsaw was a gift from her husband, Geoff Ramsey. A wood designer from Disneyland parks, R.L. Blair, also helped teach her.
Before she started carving wood, Ramsey designed and painted games on playgrounds. She did this at elementary schools in Austin Independent School District. This project helped encourage kids to be more active.
Working in Entertainment
Ramsey worked for several years at Rooster Teeth Productions, a company that makes online videos. While there, she created a video series called Pajamachievements. She also helped write Rooster Teeth Comics. She worked on the production design for shows like Immersion and RT Shorts. She also appeared as a guest on the Rooster Teeth Podcast many times. She left the company in October 2011.
In 2013, Ramsey was the Production Designer for an independent film called Grow Up, Tony Phillips. In 2014, she starred in the Rooster Teeth series Happy Hour with her then-husband, Geoff Ramsey, and friend Gavin Free. In 2016, Ramsey acted in the Dungeons & Dragons web series Heroes and Halfwits. In 2017, she played a character called The Griffon in The Eleven Little Roosters.
In 2017, she started a monthly podcast with her husband called Relationship Goals. It was about modern relationships. Later that year, Ramsey shared that she and Geoff Ramsey were getting a divorce.
Creative Works and Projects
Griffon Ramsey uses different chainsaws to create a "rustic" look for her art. She also uses tools like angle grinders and sanders for small details. She often burns, stains, and paints her sculptures to make them look even better.
Ramsey often asks her fans on Twitter for ideas for her carvings. She makes videos for her YouTube channel that show how she creates each piece. In these videos, she also explains why she chose to make certain sculptures.
Ramsey gets ideas from many places, including street artists and wood carvers. She says her art comes from a strong need to change her surroundings and make her ideas real. People have praised her work, saying that she makes a chainsaw seem like an elegant tool for detailed art. Ramsey enjoys that chainsaw carving is also a type of performance art. She feels like two things are happening at once: creating the art and the experience of making it.
One of her most complex sculptures was of an archeologist finding a genie. It was called Professor Morris Finds a Lamp. This piece received a lot of praise.
In October 2011, her carving of the Crimson Omen logo from the Gears of War video game series got a lot of attention. Many gaming websites called it a perfect tribute to the game.
In October 2014, her video of carving Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy became very popular. It was shared on many geek culture websites. In November 2014, she carved Elsa from Disney's Frozen. She was inspired by her daughter's love for the character. In December 2014, the company Stihl asked Ramsey to carve a special piece for their 40th Anniversary.
In January 2015, Ramsey took part in the Australian Chainsaw Carving Championships. She carved a story book from The Neverending Story and won the People's Choice Award. In February 2015, she carved Majora's Mask, a life-sized copy of the mask from The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. This carving also got a lot of attention from the gaming community. In September 2015, Ramsey participated in the Scottish Open Chainsaw Carving Championships.
