Groot is a cool character from American comic books published by Marvel Comics. He was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby. Groot first appeared in Tales to Astonish #13 in November 1960.
He is an alien who looks like a tree. At first, the original Groot was an invader who wanted to capture humans for experiments. Groot can only say "I am Groot" over and over. But this simple phrase can mean many different things! In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies, characters like Star-Lord, Thor, and Rocket Raccoon can actually understand him.
Groot was later brought back in 2006 as a good guy. He appeared in the big comic book story "Annihilation: Conquest." After that, Groot became a star in his own spin-off series, Guardians of the Galaxy. He then joined the superhero team with the same name.
Groot has become very popular. He is featured in lots of Marvel stuff, like animated TV shows, toys, and trading cards. Vin Diesel is the voice of Groot in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films. He first voiced Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014). Vin Diesel also voiced Groot's son, often called "Baby Groot." He continued to voice Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017), Avengers: Infinity War (2018), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Thor: Love and Thunder (2022), and The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. He also voiced Baby Groot in the short series I Am Groot.

Groot's Special Abilities
Powers and How He Works
Groot can eat wood to get energy. He also has an amazing ability to regrow himself. Groot can control trees and plants around him. He uses them to attack or help his friends. He is also very tough and seems to be resistant to fire. Groot can grow much bigger very quickly, but this makes it hard for him to move around.
Groot has seemed to die many times in the comics. But each time, he grows back from a tiny piece of himself, like a small twig!
What "I Am Groot" Really Means
Black Bolt's brother, Maximus the Mad, once said that when Groot says "I am Groot!", he is actually saying many different things. The way he says it, like his tone of voice, changes the meaning. It's like how we use different words to make sentences. People who spend a lot of time with Groot slowly learn to understand what his different "I am Groot" phrases mean. They can even have full conversations with him!
Groot's species, called Flora colossi, are very strong and heavy when they are grown up. This makes their voice box stiff. Because of this, people who don't know how Flora colossi speak might think Groot is just repeating his name. It's not clear if Maximus was right or just being crazy. But Groot did seem to help Maximus with some very complex engineering. Later, in a comic called All-New X-Men #23, Jean Grey used her mind powers to connect with Groot. She found that Groot's thoughts are actually very complex. His "I am Groot!" usually means he is trying to say something very smart.
In the movie Avengers: Infinity War, Thor jokes that learning the Flora colossi language is an elective class in Asgardian schools.
