Troy Baker's Career Journey
Starting in Voice Acting
Troy Baker started his voice acting career by doing radio commercials in Dallas. Soon after, he began working on English versions of Japanese anime shows for Funimation. He lent his voice to characters in popular anime like Bleach, Dragon Ball Z, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Naruto: Shippuden.
Later, he moved to Los Angeles and started working on animated series based on Marvel Comics. He voiced various characters in shows like The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, and played both Hawkeye and Loki in Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble.
Big Roles in Video Games
Troy Baker's journey into video games began when he voiced Matt Baker in the Brothers in Arms series. He explained that actors were becoming more important in games, and he just kept getting new roles.
Some of his biggest roles came in 2013. He voiced Booker DeWitt in BioShock Infinite and played Joel in The Last of Us. For The Last of Us, he also did the motion capture, which means his movements were recorded to make the character's actions look real. Both games were very successful and praised by critics. He won an award for his role as Joel in The Last of Us.
He also played Nathan Drake's older brother, Sam, in Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. In 2011, he became the voice of Siris in the mobile game series Infinity Blade, and in 2014, he voiced Talion in Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.
Troy Baker is one of the few actors who has voiced many different famous characters from the Batman universe. He has played Batman himself in games like Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes, and also the Joker in Batman: Arkham Origins. He has even voiced three different versions of Robin!
From 2018 to 2020, Troy Baker co-hosted a weekly YouTube show called Retro Replay with fellow voice actor Nolan North.
AI Voice Technology Discussion
In early 2022, Troy Baker announced he was working with a company called Voiceverse NFT. This caused some discussion because the company was using AI (Artificial Intelligence) to create voices. Many people, especially other voice actors, were worried about how AI voice technology might affect their jobs.
It was also found that Voiceverse had used technology from a free voice program without permission. After hearing the concerns from fans and other actors, Troy Baker decided to end his partnership with Voiceverse. He understood that his initial announcement might have seemed challenging, and he wanted to support the voice acting community.
Music Career
Before he became a famous voice actor, Troy Baker was the lead singer and guitarist for an alternative rock band called Tripp Fontaine. They released an album in 2004.
He later released his first solo album, Sitting in the Fire, in 2014. In 2017, he and his band, now called Window to the Abbey, released another album titled Moving Around Bias.
