Grindelwald is a unique town in Tasmania, Australia. It is famous for its special Swiss village style. About 965 people lived here in 2016. The town is located in the West Tamar area. It is about 25 kilometers (15 miles) south-east of Beaconsfield.
Grindelwald is also known as the finish line for the yearly TasGas cycling challenge.

Exploring Grindelwald's Past
Grindelwald officially became a locality in 1983. It got its name from a beautiful village in Switzerland.
How Grindelwald Was Built
This special town was created by Roelf Vos. He was an immigrant from the Netherlands. Roelf Vos wanted to build a Swiss-style village in Tasmania. He started this project after selling his supermarket chain.
The town was built around a man-made lake. Next to the lake is the Tamar Valley Resort. This resort also has the same Swiss look. Construction of the town began in 1980. The resort opened its doors in 1989.
Future Plans for Grindelwald
In 2013, there were plans for a large eco-tourism project. This project was going to cost $103 million. However, the land for this project was later divided into smaller lots.
Grindelwald's Location
Muddy Creek forms the southern edge of Grindelwald.
Roads and Travel
The main road, Route A7 (West Tamar Highway), runs along the north-east side of the town.
