Grisedale Tarn is famous for an old legend. People say it is the resting place of a crown. This crown belonged to Dunmail, the last king of Cumbria. In the year 945, King Dunmail was defeated in battle. His soldiers are said to have carried his crown to the tarn. They threw it into the water to keep it safe. The legend says the crown still lies hidden there today.

Grisedale Tarn is quite high up. It sits at about 538 metres (1,765 ft) above sea level. The deepest part of the tarn is around 33 metres (108 ft). That's like a 10-story building underwater!
Wildlife in the Tarn
Even though it's a cold mountain lake, Grisedale Tarn is home to fish. You can find brown trout swimming in its waters. Perch and eels also live there. The water from the tarn flows out towards another lake called Ullswater. This outflow carries rainfall from the eastern side of Dollywagon Pike.
