Grisedale Tarn: A Mountain Lake

Grisedale Tarn is a special kind of lake. It is known as a tarn. Tarns are usually found in mountain areas. They are often formed in hollows left behind by ancient glaciers. This makes Grisedale Tarn a cool natural feature.

Where is Grisedale Tarn?

You can find Grisedale Tarn in the famous Lake District National Park. This park is in Cumbria, England. The tarn is located between the peaks of Fairfield and Dollywagon Pike. It is a popular spot for hikers.

The Legend of King Dunmail

Grisedale Tarn is famous for an old legend. People say it is the resting place of a crown. This crown belonged to Dunmail, the last king of Cumbria. In the year 945, King Dunmail was defeated in battle. His soldiers are said to have carried his crown to the tarn. They threw it into the water to keep it safe. The legend says the crown still lies hidden there today.

Facts About Grisedale Tarn

Wildlife in the Tarn

Even though it's a cold mountain lake, Grisedale Tarn is home to fish. You can find brown trout swimming in its waters. Perch and eels also live there. The water from the tarn flows out towards another lake called Ullswater. This outflow carries rainfall from the eastern side of Dollywagon Pike.
