The Story of Groove Squad
Chrissy, Ping, and Mackenzie (called "Mac") are best friends. They are cheerleaders at Bay City High School. They are typical teenagers. They care about how they look, boys, and school dances. They are also busy getting ready for a big cheerleading competition.
One day, they are at a hair salon. Chrissy's friend, Adrienne, owns the salon. The girls get zapped by a jolt of electricity. But it does more than just change their hair. The electricity gives them superpowers! Chrissy gets superhuman strength. Her superhero suit turns red. Ping gains the ability to fly. Her suit is blue. Mac gets X-ray vision. Her suit is green.
The girls soon face a huge new challenge. It's much bigger than just cheerleading. They must stop the evil Dr. Nightingale. He wants to take over the whole world. Dr. Nightingale is also the father of one of their fellow cheerleaders.
The girls are excited to be superheroes. Chrissy especially loves her new powers. But they quickly learn that being a superhero is not easy. They need to practice using their powers. They also have to work together as a team. Each girl only has one superpower. Their powers only work when they drink a special fruit smoothie. This smoothie also makes them transform into their superhero forms.
In the end, the girls manage to defeat Dr. Nightingale and his helpers. They also win the cheerleading competition. They had spent most of the movie practicing for it. The movie is full of funny details. It includes flower power hippies and a car like James Bond's. There's also a character who sounds like Austin Powers.
Meet the Characters!
Our Heroes and Friends
Chrissy (Jennifer Love Hewitt): Chrissy tells the story. She is the cheerleading captain at Bay City High School. She is also the leader of the superhero team. Chrissy has blonde hair, blue eyes, and fair skin. She gains the power of superhuman strength. Her superhero suit is red. Chrissy has a big rivalry with Star Nightingale. Star wants to be the head cheerleader instead. Chrissy also has a crush on Fernando, a handsome exchange student. Chrissy can sometimes be a bit of a diva. But she is a kind and friendly person. She is also a good leader.
Ping (Valerie Sing Turner): Ping is one of Chrissy's best friends. She is Asian-American. When she and her friends become the Groove Squad, she can fly. Her superhero suit is blue. Ping can be a bit silly and dramatic. But she is the nicest member of the team. She also has smart moments. She and Zeke, the team mascot, like each other. They seem to become a couple. They are shown together at the school dance at the end.
Mackenzie (Bettina Bush): Mackenzie is nicknamed "Mac." She is best friends with Chrissy and Ping. Mac is the smartest and most grown-up of the three. She is African-American or multiracial. She has dark skin, dark hair, and green eyes. Mac gains the power of X-ray vision. Her superhero suit is green. Mac does not have a crush like Chrissy or Ping. At the end of the movie, Adrienne sets her up with a friend named Derek. Derek is a student at Bay City High School. He also has excellent grades.
Zeke (Andrew Francis): Zeke is the girls' closest male friend. He is also their high school mascot. He does not get superpowers like the girls. But he is a very helpful friend. He helps keep their superhero identities a secret. He also helps them on their missions. Adrienne adds many cool upgrades to Zeke's car. This helps him and the girls on their superhero adventures. Zeke is not an official cheerleader. But he is very good at it. He takes Star's place in a routine at the end of the movie. He helps the squad win the cheerleading championship. He and Ping like each other and start dating.
Adrienne (Blu Mankuma): Adrienne is originally from England. He is a hairstylist. He helps Chrissy and her friends learn to use their new powers. He helps them defeat Dr. Nightingale. After the girls get their powers, Adrienne tells them a secret. Before becoming a hairstylist, he was a secret agent. He worked for Mi6. Dr. Nightingale was an old enemy from those days. Adrienne's secret agent code name was "0064.2." He also worked in fashion. He gives the girls special containers for their smoothies. These smoothies help them transform. He has a pet dog named Napoleon. At the end, he helps Mac meet Derek.
The Villains
Dr. Nathaniel Nightingale (Mackenzie Gray): Dr. Nightingale is the main bad guy. He is a mad scientist who wants to rule the world. He has tried many times but always failed. He first meets Chrissy, Ping, and Mac when they save him. His Brain Buster-laser malfunctions early in the movie. Later, we learn he is an old enemy of Adrienne's. He is also Star's dad. Even though he is a supervillain, he and Star seem to love each other.
Larry (Alec Willows): Larry is Dr. Nightingale's cyborg helper. He is loyal to his boss. But Larry is also a bit scared and not very smart. He does not seem as evil as Dr. Nightingale. Larry says he and Dr. Nightingale have known each other for at least fifteen years.
Flower Power: This is a group of three superpowered hippies. Dr. Nightingale hires them. Their job is to distract the Groove Squad. This helps him try to take over the world. It also helps his daughter, Star, become head cheerleader. The group has two men and one woman. They got their powers from the same electric shock as the girls. Their powers let them use their hair like extra arms.
Other Important Characters
Star Nightingale (Meghan Black): Star is one of Chrissy, Ping, and Mac's fellow cheerleaders. She has red hair, brown eyes, and fair skin. She is a typical high school "Mean Girl." Star is more of a rival to Chrissy than to Ping or Mac. She really wants to take Chrissy's place as head cheerleader. Star also has a crush on Fernando. She wants to steal him from Chrissy. Star is Dr. Nightingale's daughter. She is almost as evil as he is. But her evil is more like "high school evil." We don't know if Star knows her dad is a supervillain. We also don't know who her mother is. Star hurts her ankle near the end of the movie. This means she cannot perform in the cheerleading competition. Zeke takes her place instead.
Stacy and Roxanne (Vanessa Morley and Kathleen Barr, respectively): Stacy and Roxanne are identical twin sisters. They have brown hair, green eyes, and tanned skin. They are also Star's best friends. They are cheerleaders with Chrissy, Ping, and Mac. They seem to be the tallest on the cheerleading squad. For most of the movie, they try to please Star. They often help with her plans to replace Chrissy. But when Star is not around, they seem like nice girls. For example, when Star hurts her ankle, they leave her. They continue to perform with Chrissy and her friends. Before Chrissy and her friends got back for the competition, Star tried to declare herself head cheerleader. The twins seemed unsure about Star being their new captain.
Fernando (Santo Lombardo): Fernando is a handsome exchange student from Spain. He speaks Spanish. He is on the football team at Bay City High School. Both Chrissy and Star have a crush on him. The other cheerleaders also find him attractive. Fernando often talks about himself using his own name. He often calls Chrissy "Señorita Chrissy." Fernando is popular with girls. But he only seems to like Chrissy. He often tries to ask her out. The first time, he pretends he needs help understanding American slang. Later, he tries to hang out with Chrissy while she practices cheerleading. Finally, Fernando asks Chrissy to be his date for a school dance. The dance is after the cheerleading competition. Chrissy agrees to go with him.
