Grossdietwil's History and Origins
Grossdietwil was first mentioned in old records in 1194. Back then, it was known by a different name, Toutwillare. It wasn't until 1810 that the town officially became known as Grossdietwil.

Grossdietwil covers an area of about 10.2 square kilometers (about 4 square miles). A large part of this land, about 72.2%, is used for farming. Forests cover another 22% of the area. The remaining 5.8% of the land is where buildings and roads are located.
The town is nestled in the upper part of the Rot valley, which is called Rottal. Grossdietwil includes the main village itself. It also has smaller communities called hamlets, like Arpolingen and Kället. There is even a separate piece of land belonging to Grossdietwil, called an exclave, known as Eppenwil.
