Grover Salman Wormer (born August 9, 1821 – died January 26, 1904) was an important officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He started his career building steamboats before the war began.

Early Life and Beginnings

Grover Wormer was born in Auburn, New York, on August 9, 1821. His father was a soldier from Massachusetts who fought in the War of 1812. Before the Civil War, Grover used his skills as a builder of steamboats.

Serving in the Civil War

When the Civil War started, Grover Wormer joined the Union Army. He served in several different groups from Michigan:

  • He started as a captain with the Stanton Guards. He finished his service with them on September 25, 1862.
  • Next, he became a lieutenant colonel in the 8th Michigan Volunteer Cavalry Regiment on October 3, 1862.
  • Later, he was promoted to colonel in the 30th Michigan Volunteer Infantry Regiment on November 21, 1864.

He officially left the volunteer army on June 30, 1865, after the war ended.

After the War and Recognition

After the Civil War, Grover Wormer was recognized for his service. On March 23, 1867, President Andrew Johnson suggested that Wormer be given the honorary rank of brigadier general of volunteers. This special rank was made official by the United States Senate on March 28, 1867.

After his military career, Wormer became a merchant in Detroit, Michigan. He lived there until his death on January 26, 1904. Grover S. Wormer is buried at Elmwood Cemetery (Detroit, Michigan).
