The Guadalfeo is a small but important river in the province of Granada, Spain. It flows between two big mountain ranges. These are the Sierra Nevada and the coastal mountains of Sierra de la Contraviesa and Lújar.

The Guadalfeo River's Journey

Where the River Begins

The Guadalfeo River is not born from one single source. Instead, it forms when three other rivers meet. These rivers are the Rio Poqueira, the Río Trevélez, and the Cádiar. The Poqueira and Trevélez rivers join first. Then, they meet the Cádiar River near the town of Órgiva. This is where the Guadalfeo truly begins its journey.

Flowing Through the Land

For much of its path, the river flows through a beautiful area called La Alpujarra. It winds its way through this region. The river then reaches the sea near Motril. Before it gets there, it passes through an amazing gorge. This gorge is a deep valley between the Lújar and Chaparal mountains.

Even though it's a river, its water is often used up before it reaches the sea. This is because farmers use its water. They need it to grow crops in the dry climate.

The Rules Dam

A large dam called the Rules dam was built across the river. It is located near Vélez de Benaudalla. This dam helps to control the river's water. It also creates a big lake, called a reservoir. This reservoir holds a lot of water. Building the dam caused a part of the river valley to be flooded. This helps store water for people and farms.
