The Guadalupe Mountain necklacepod is a special kind of flowering plant. Its scientific name is Dermatophyllum gypsophilum. People also call it the Guadalupe mescalbean or gypsum necklace. This plant is quite rare.
It grows naturally in New Mexico and Texas in the United States. You can also find it in one place in Chihuahua, Mexico.

What Does It Look Like?
This plant is a shrub, which is like a small bush. It can grow up to 2 meters (about 6.5 feet) tall. Its leaves are tough and feel a bit like leather. They also have a cool silver-haired look. When it blooms, it shows off beautiful purple flowers.
Where Does It Grow?
The Guadalupe Mountain necklacepod has two main types, called subspecies. Each subspecies grows in different areas.
Subspecies gypsophilum
This type of the plant is found in Chihuahua, Mexico. It grows in the area between Coyame and Chihuahua City.
Subspecies guadalupensis
You can find this other type in the Brokeoff Mountains and Guadalupe Mountains in New Mexico. It also grows in Culberson County, Texas.
Growing in Gypsum Soil
This plant loves to grow in soil that has a lot of gypsum. Gypsum is a soft mineral. It is often used to make plaster or drywall.
In the Guadalupe Mountains, the soil is usually pink sandstone. It also has some gypsum or limestone. About 1% of the soil is gypsum. Another plant called Tiquilia hispidissima often grows nearby. This plant also needs gypsum soil to survive.
