The Guadarrama River is an important river in Spain. It's like a smaller river that flows into a bigger one, which is called a tributary. The Guadarrama flows into the Tagus River, which is the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula.
The Guadarrama River starts high up in the mountains. Its source is in the Siete Picos (Seven Peaks) area, which is part of the Sierra de Guadarrama mountain range. This area is located in the Community of Madrid, right in the middle of Spain. The river begins at a high point, about 1,900 metres (6,200 ft) above sea level.

The Guadarrama River's Journey
The Guadarrama River travels a long way, flowing from the north towards the south. It stretches for about 131.80 kilometres (81.90 mi) (which is about 82 miles). As it flows, it passes through two different parts of Spain: the autonomous community of Castilla-La Mancha and the Province of Toledo. Finally, it joins the Tagus River in this area.
A Special Protected Area
A large part of the Guadarrama River's middle section is a special protected area. This means it's a place where nature is kept safe and healthy. It's called the Regional Park of the Middle Course of the Guadarrama River and Its Surroundings. This park is one of three important regional parks found in the Community of Madrid.
The River's Basin
The area of land that collects all the water flowing into the Guadarrama River is called its river basin. This basin covers a large space, about 1,708 square kilometres (659 sq mi) (or 660 square miles).
Main Tributary: The Aulencia River
The Guadarrama River has a main tributary that flows into it. This smaller river is called the Aulencia River. The Aulencia River flows entirely within the Community of Madrid. It's also very important because it helps supply water to the Valmayor reservoir, which holds water for people to use.
