A Look Back: History of Guadiana
Guadiana is a special kind of town called a planned community. This means it was designed and built from scratch. It was founded in 1949 and officially opened in 1951.
The town was named after the nearby Guadiana river. It was one of many villages created by a group called the Instituto Nacional de Colonización. This group helped develop new farming areas in Spain.
For many years, Guadiana was a part of the larger Badajoz municipality. In 1971, it became a smaller local entity. Then, on February 17, 2012, it officially became its own independent municipality.
The town's original name included "del Caudillo," which referred to a historical leader. In 2020, the town's name was officially changed to just Guadiana.
Where is Guadiana? Geography
Guadiana is located in a flat area with many canals and farms. It sits between two rivers, the Alcazaba and the Guadiana.
The town is about 32 kilometers (20 miles) west of Badajoz and 32 kilometers (20 miles) east of Mérida. It is also close to the border with Portugal, about 47 kilometers (29 miles) from the Portuguese city of Elvas.
Guadiana is an interesting place because it is an enclave. This means it is completely surrounded by the land of the Badajoz municipality. Other nearby towns include Pueblonuevo del Guadiana and Montijo.
