A Look at Guamá's Past
Puerto Rico was once controlled by Spain. After the Spanish–American War, which ended in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This agreement was part of the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became an "unincorporated territory" of the U.S., meaning it's part of the U.S. but doesn't have all the same rights as a state.
In 1899, the United States government did a count of all the people in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. The census found that 1,188 people lived in the Guamá area at that time.
