Guardian is a small place in Webster County, West Virginia, in the United States. It's called an unincorporated community. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Guardian is located near the Right Fork Holly River. You can find it along West Virginia Route 15. It is about 11.4 miles (18.3 km) north-northwest of Webster Springs.
Exploring Guardian's Past
Guardian once had its own post office. A post office is where people send and receive mail. This post office closed its doors on February 1, 1988. The community got its name from a company that used to be in the area, called the Guardian Coal and Oil Company.
How Guardian Got Its Name
Before it was called Guardian, this community had a different name. From the 1880s until 1937, it was known as Removal. The name changed to Guardian when the post office opened with that new name. In some older mail records, the area was also called Middleport. The story of Guardian, including its earlier names, is very detailed. You can find a lot of information in a two-book series. These books, called Removal Reflections: A History of Guardian/Removal, West Virginia, were published in 2002 and 2015.
