Discover Guatiza Village
Guatiza is located just 2 kilometers (about 1.2 miles) from Lanzarote's east coast. It's also 8 kilometers (about 5 miles) east of the town of Teguise. The island's main city, Arrecife, is about 14 kilometers (about 8.7 miles) northeast of Guatiza.
The Famous Cactus Garden
Guatiza is most famous for its amazing Cactus Garden. This special garden was designed by a famous artist named César Manrique. It's a huge place, covering about 5,000 square meters (that's like more than a football field!).
Inside the garden, you can find over 1,400 different types of cactus plants. These cacti come from all over the world, including America, Madagascar, and even the Canary Islands themselves. It's a fantastic place to see how many different shapes and sizes cacti can be!
A Look at Guatiza's History
Long ago, Guatiza was built on the side of a mountain, where the cemetery is today. But the village faced a big problem: pirates! In the past, pirates from North Africa, often called Moors, would attack and rob homes in Guatiza many times.
Because of these pirate attacks, the people of Guatiza decided to move their homes. They rebuilt the village in a safer area, away from the coast. This new location helped protect them from future pirate raids.
