History of Guerrero's Missions
In the early 1700s, several Christian missions were built in and around Guerrero. These missions were known as the San Juan Bautista missions. Their main goal was to teach local groups, like the Ervipiame, about Christianity.
Mission San Juan Bautista
The first mission was called Mission San Juan Bautista. It was first started in 1699, about 25 miles north of Lampazos in Nuevo León. This was along the Sabinas River. On January 1, 1700, the mission was moved to Guerrero.
Other Important Missions
Another mission, Mission San Francisco Solano, was founded in 1700. Then, Mission San Bernardo was started in the spring of 1702. Today, you can still see the ruins of these old missions. They are important places for archaeologists to study history. In 2015, the mission area was named a Pueblos Mágicos site. This means it's a special, magical town in Mexico.
The Presidio Fort
In 1703, a presidio was built at San Juan Bautista. A presidio is a type of fort. It helped protect the missions and the people living there.
