Guillaume Amfrye de Chaulieu (born around 1639 – died June 27, 1720) was a French poet and a very clever person. He was born in Fontenay, a town in Normandy, France.
Early Life and Education
Guillaume's father was an important financial officer in Rouen. He sent Guillaume to study at the Collège de Navarre, a famous school. Even when he was young, Guillaume showed how witty and smart he was.
He quickly became a favorite of the Duke of Vendôme. The Duke helped him get positions, including a role at the Aumale monastery.
Life at Court
The Duke of Vendôme and his brother, Philippe, were important figures. They had a shared home where they hosted many lively gatherings. Chaulieu became a close friend and advisor to these two princes.
He traveled to Poland with the Marquis de Béthune. Guillaume hoped to find a good job at the court of King John Sobieski. He even saw one of the Polish king's military campaigns in Ukraine. However, he returned to Paris without getting any new position.
A writer named Saint-Simon wrote about Chaulieu. Saint-Simon claimed that Chaulieu helped the grand prior manage the Duke of Vendôme's money in a way that was not helpful. However, other historians, like Sainte-Beuve, have questioned Saint-Simon's story. They believed Saint-Simon might have been unfair in his description.
Later Years and Works
In his older years, Chaulieu spent a lot of time at the small court of the Duchesse du Maine. Her court was in a place called Sceaux.
There, he became a very trusted friend of Mlle Delaunay. They wrote many interesting letters to each other. Among his poems, the most famous ones are Fontenay and La Retraite.
His writings were put together and published with those of his friend, the Marquis de La Fare. These collections were published in 1714, 1750, and 1774. You can also learn more about him in books by C. A. Sainte-Beuve.
