Guillon (pronounced gwee-yon) was once a small commune, which is like a local town or village area, in north-central France. It was located in the Yonne department, which is a part of the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region.
On January 1, 2019, Guillon joined with other nearby communes to form a new, larger commune called Guillon-Terre-Plaine. This means Guillon is no longer a separate commune on its own. It is found close to the Côte-d'Or and Nièvre departments.

Guillon's Past: A Glimpse into History
Guillon has a long history, even though it is a small place. Long ago, it had a castle and a protective wall around it. The castle was taken down in 1418. Today, no one knows exactly where it stood.
The Hundred Years' War and a Special Treaty
During the Hundred Years' War, a long conflict between England and France, English soldiers took control of Guillon. Peace came to the area in 1360 with an important agreement. This agreement was signed between the region of Burgundy (where Guillon is) and England. It is known as the Treaty of Guillon, or sometimes the Treaty of Golden Sheep.
Under this treaty, Burgundy agreed to pay a large sum of 200,000 gold coins to the English army. This payment was for a three-year peace agreement. After this treaty was signed, King Edward III of England even stayed at the Chateau de Guillon. This is the only time the castle is mentioned in historical records.
Building the Bridge for Trade
Once the fighting stopped and peace returned, people wanted to make trade easier. So, in the early 15th century, a bridge was built over the Serein River. This bridge helped people and goods move more freely. The bridge you see today was updated in 1866. This update made the road wider for better travel.
