The Story of Gurley
Gurley was started in 1913. This happened when the railroad tracks were built to reach that spot. The village was named after Fred R. Gurley. He was a superintendent for the Burlington Railroad.
Early Days and the Railroad
The first train station in Gurley opened in the winter of 1915-1916. It was made from three old train cars! One car was for the office, one for freight, and another for the station agent and their family to live in. George Wallen was the first agent. Fred Gurley, the person the town was named after, was the agent from 1916 to 1919.
While Fred Gurley was the agent, he started a park. It was north of the train station. He planted flowers and built a special archway in the middle. There is still a park there today!
First Businesses and People
The Gurley Lumber Company was one of the first businesses in town. S.J. Flora became its manager in 1914. The first person born in Gurley was Clara Anneva Flora. She later became Clara Lessig. As of 2008, Clara was still an active part of the Gurley community.
F.W. Busse ran the first general store and post office. This same building also had a pharmacy and a doctor's office. Dr. Hart was the doctor at that time. He also had Gurley's first telephone switchboard.
Around 1915, Christ Weyerts built a garage and a dance hall. He also built the Gurley State Bank in 1915. It was on the south side of Main Street but closed in 1921. A.K. Greenlee built a brick building in 1915. In it, he ran a grocery and dry goods store.
Gurley's first grain elevator was built between 1914 and 1915. It sadly burned down on March 14, 1941. A new grain elevator was built. The Farmer's Union Elevator bought it in August 1960.
