Gustatory system facts for kids
The gustatory system is how your body experiences the sense of taste. It's a special sensory system that helps you tell the difference between sweet, sour, salty, and bitter foods.
How We Taste
Your body is always reacting to things around it. These reactions, called stimuli, are picked up by tiny parts called sensory receptors. These receptors turn the information into signals your brain can understand. On your tongue, you have special receptors that help you taste four main things.
Salty Tastes
Salty is one of the simplest tastes your tongue can detect. It helps you recognize foods that contain salt.
Sour Tastes
Sour tastes usually come from acidic foods. Think of lemons or vinegar; they have a strong sour flavor because of the acids in them.
Bitter Tastes
Bitter tastes are very important for your safety! Many poisonous things in nature taste bitter. So, if something tastes very bitter, your body tells you to spit it out. This helps keep you safe from harmful substances. The receptors for bitter tastes are the most complex ones on your tongue.
Sweet Tastes
Sweet tastes often come from foods that have a lot of carbohydrates, like glucose. These foods give your body energy. Think of fruits or honey; they taste sweet because of their natural sugars.
