The Gutland (which means Good Land in Luxembourgish) is a special region that covers the middle and southern parts of Luxembourg. It's a very important area, making up about two-thirds of the entire country! Most of Luxembourg's people, around 90% (that's about 540,000 people!), call the Gutland home.

This region is known for its gentle, low hills. These hills usually rise between 200 and 300 meters above sea level. The land here is often very fertile, which means it's great for farming.

In the past, the Gutland included areas that were part of the Grevenmacher and Luxembourg Districts. It also covered the very southern parts of the Diekirch District.

What Makes the Gutland Special?

The Gutland gets its name, "Good Land," because of its rich and fertile soil. This makes it perfect for growing crops and raising animals. Unlike the northern part of Luxembourg, called the Oesling, the Gutland has a milder climate and less rugged terrain. This combination of good soil and pleasant weather has made it the most populated and developed part of the country.

Geography and Landscape

The landscape of the Gutland is mostly rolling hills and wide valleys. You'll find many farms, small villages, and even larger towns and cities spread across this area. Rivers like the Alzette flow through the Gutland, creating beautiful river valleys. These rivers have helped shape the landscape over thousands of years.

Home to Many People

Because the Gutland is so fertile and has a milder climate, it has always been an attractive place for people to live. This is why most of Luxembourg's population lives here. The capital city, Luxembourg City, is also located in the Gutland. This makes the region the economic and cultural heart of the country.
