Guy is a small, unincorporated community in Fort Bend County, Texas, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. In 2000, about 60 people lived in Guy. It is located within the larger Greater Houston area.

History of Guy

Early Settlers and the Post Office

The first European-American settler in the Guy area was Philip F. Ward in 1890. Other families soon followed him. In 1898, a post office was opened. It was named after Una Guy Rowland, who was the daughter of the first postmaster, Orr Rowland.

In 1900, the terrible 1900 Galveston Hurricane caused a lot of damage in the area.

Moving for the Railroad and Highway

In 1918, a railroad line was built through Guy by the Galveston, Harrisburg and San Antonio Railway. Because of this, local businesses moved about 2 miles (3.2 km) southwest to be closer to the new train line. The old town site became known as "Old Guy." This is where a popular dance hall was located.

By 1922, Guy had a cotton gin (a machine that separates cotton fibers from their seeds), a garage, and a general store with the post office inside.

In 1932, Texas State Highway 36 was built. This new road passed right between Guy and Old Guy. So, the businesses and the post office moved again, this time northeast to the highway. The old dance hall was also moved to the new highway location.

Working and Population Changes

During this time, many people living in Guy worked in Damon, a town to the south. They worked in industries that extracted oil, sulfur, and limestone from a nearby natural formation called the Damon Mound.

In 1940, Guy's population grew to 200 people. However, the number of residents slowly decreased over the years. By 1972, only about 25 people lived in Guy.

In the 1980s, the old dance hall was bought by the George Foundation and moved to the George Ranch, which is near Richmond. Train service to Guy also stopped in the 1980s. By the 1990s, the population became stable again, with about 60 people. In 2000, Guy had 13 businesses, including a trucking company, a convenience store, a new post office building, and a tavern/cafe. In 2014, the population was estimated to be around 239 people.

Geography

Guy is located where Texas State Highway 36 and Farm to Market Road 1994 meet. It is about 18 miles (29 km) south of Richmond, 16 miles (26 km) south of Rosenberg, and 2 miles (3.2 km) southeast of Needville. All these places are in Fort Bend County.

Education

Early Schools

In 1897, a large number of farmers moved to the area, which led to the opening of the first local school. This school later moved closer to the railroad line. By 1922, there were two separate schools: one for 82 white children and another for four black children.

School Consolidation

In 1946, the Guy School joined with the Needville Independent School District. By 1949, the Guy School officially closed its doors. Today, Guy is part of the Needville Independent School District, and students attend Needville High School.
