About Guy Fletcher
Guy Edward Fletcher was born into a family that loved music. His uncle, also named Guy Fletcher, wrote many hit songs for other artists. Guy's mother, Barbara, was a singer who recorded for different projects. His father, Ted Fletcher, designed audio equipment.
Guy is also the cousin of Justin Fletcher, a well-known children's television presenter.
Early Musical Journey
When Guy was 15, he started learning to be an audio engineer at DJM Studios in London. At the same time, he played in his own bands. He learned to play keyboards, guitars, and many different stringed instruments.
In 1979, he joined the band Steve Harley & Cockney Rebel and toured with them. Later, in 1982 and 1983, he toured the world with Roxy Music for their Avalon tour.
Joining Dire Straits
In 1983, Mark Knopfler, the lead guitarist of Dire Straits, asked Guy to help with music for the films Cal and Comfort and Joy. Guy then became a full member of Dire Straits in 1984.
His first album with the band was their most successful, Brothers in Arms, released in 1985. This album made the band famous all over the world. Guy stayed with Dire Straits until they broke up in 1995.
Working with Other Artists
After Dire Straits, Guy Fletcher continued to work closely with Mark Knopfler. He became a main member of Knopfler's band when Knopfler started his solo career.
In 2005, Guy toured the world to support Knopfler's solo album, Shangri-La. In 2006, he finished a tour where Knopfler performed duets with Emmylou Harris. Guy also helped produce and played keyboards on Knopfler's album, Get Lucky, and joined his world tour in 2010.
Guy Fletcher still works with Mark Knopfler today. In early 2024, Knopfler brought together many famous musicians, called Mark Knopfler's Guitar Heroes. They recorded a new version of the song "Going Home: Theme of the Local Hero" to raise money for the Teenage Cancer Trust. Guy produced, recorded, and mixed this entire project. He also helped produce Knopfler's latest album, One Deep River, released in April 2024.
Solo Music
Guy Fletcher also creates his own music. His first solo album, Inamorata, came out on 28 January 2008. Mark Knopfler played guitar on two songs, and other musicians who worked with Knopfler also appeared on the album.
Guy's second album, Stone, was released in 2009. His third, Natural Selection, came out in 2010, and High Roads was released in 2016. His most recent album, Anomaly, was released on 22 April 2022.
