About Guy Torry

Early Life and Start in Comedy

Guy Torry grew up in St. Louis, Missouri. He went to Southeast Missouri State University. After his brother, Joe Torry, moved to Los Angeles, Guy followed him.

Guy first went to Los Angeles to finish his marketing degree. However, he decided to become a comedian instead. This happened after he watched the Russell Simmons show Def Comedy Jam around 1992.

Becoming a Stand-Up Comedian

After practicing comedy for about two years, Guy Torry made his first appearance on national television. This was on Def Comedy Jam. He then performed stand-up comedy on the Def Comedy Jam Tour across the United States.

Torry has appeared in many TV shows and films. Some of these include Premium Blend, Comic View, and Showtime at the Apollo. He also acted in movies like Runaway Jury and Don't Say a Word. One of his most famous movie roles was playing Lamont in American History X.

Phat Tuesdays Comedy Show

Guy Torry created and hosted a weekly stand-up comedy show called Phat Tuesdays. This show started in 1995. It was a special place for African American comedians to perform.

Phat Tuesdays was held at The Comedy Store in Hollywood. The show ran until 2005. In 2022, a Amazon television program was made about the show. It had the same name, Phat Tuesdays.

During the 1990s, audiences were surprised when comedian Bob Saget performed at Phat Tuesdays. Bob Saget was known for the TV show Full House. Guy Torry had invited Saget to perform that night.
