Discovering Gwambygine's History

How Gwambygine Town Began

In 1831, one of the first settlers, John Burdett Wittenoom, received land here. He named his property Gwambygine. Later, in 1901, the government bought this land. They divided it into smaller pieces called the Gwambygine Estate. Some of the land along the Avon River was set aside to become a town. This new town was officially recognized in 1902.

The Railway Siding's Story

A railway stop, first known as Hick's Siding, was built near the town in 1902. It was named after J. Hicks, who had rented the property in the 1860s. In 1910, the railway stop was renamed Gwambygine, matching the town's name.
