Gyoji Matsumoto (松本 暁司, Matsumoto Gyōji, August 13, 1934 – September 2, 2019) was a Japanese football player. He was a goalkeeper who played for the national team. After his playing career, he became a successful football coach.

Playing for Clubs

Gyoji Matsumoto was born in Saitama, Japan, on August 13, 1934. After finishing his studies at Saitama University, he joined a local football team. This team was called Urawa Club.

Playing for Japan

On December 28, 1958, Gyoji Matsumoto played his first game for the Japan national team. This important match was against Malaya, which is now known as Malaysia. He played one game for his country.

Becoming a Coach

After he stopped playing football, Matsumoto became a coach. He managed the team at Saitama Urawa Minami High School. In 1969, his high school team achieved something amazing. They won the "treble."

What is a Treble?

Winning a "treble" means a team wins three major championships in the same year. Urawa Minami High School won the All Japan High School Soccer Tournament. They also won the Inter-High School Championships. Finally, they won the National Sports Festival of Japan. This was the first time a high school team had won all three titles.

Coaching Future Stars

Gyoji Matsumoto helped many young players improve their skills. Some of the players he coached later became international players themselves. One famous player he coached was Kozo Tashima.

Later Life

Gyoji Matsumoto passed away on September 2, 2019. He was 85 years old when he died in Saitama, Japan.
