Gökşin Sipahioğlu (born December 28, 1926 – died October 5, 2011) was a Turkish photographer and journalist. He is famous for starting Sipa Press, a photo agency based in Paris, France. He spent most of his life in Paris, where French media called him "le Grand Turc," meaning "the Great Turk." He also helped create the Kadiköy Sports Club. This club is now well-known for its basketball team, Efes Pilsen.

Sipahioğlu was also an editor for a newspaper called Istanbul Express.

Starting Sipa Press

In 1972, Sipahioğlu went to Munich to cover the Olympics. There, he photographed a Palestinian attack on Israeli athletes. The powerful impact of these pictures led him to start his own photo agency.

In 1973, he launched Sipa Press with his partner, Phyllis Springer. Sipa Press grew to represent some of the world's most famous photographers. It became a very important source for news photos.

In 2001, he sold Sipa Press to a company called Sud Communication. This company was owned by a businessman named Pierre Fabre. Sipahioğlu stayed on as chairman until he retired in 2003.

Awards and Recognition

In January 2007, the French president, Jacques Chirac, honored Sipahioğlu. He was made a Knight of the Legion of Honour. This is a very high award in France.

Personal Life

Gökşin Sipahioğlu married Phyllis Springer in 2002. He passed away on October 5, 2011, in a hospital in Paris. He was 84 years old.
