In the 1987–88 season, he played in 30 matches. Werder Bremen won the national championship that year. It was their first league title in 23 years.

In December 1992, Hermann left Bremen. He had played 231 top-league matches for the club. He then joined SG Wattenscheid 09, another team in the top division. He helped them stay in the league.
