Günter Hermann (born 5 December 1960) is a German former professional footballer. He played as a defensive midfielder, mostly for Werder Bremen.

He was also part of the West Germany national team that won the World Cup in 1990.

Playing for Top Clubs

Günter Hermann spent almost ten years playing professional football. Most of this time was with SV Werder Bremen. He first played in the Bundesliga, Germany's top league, on 11 December 1982. This was in a 2–1 win against VfL Bochum.

After a slow start, Hermann became a very important player. He often played as a defensive midfielder. His job was to protect the defense and win the ball back. He often played alongside the famous player Miroslav Votava.

In the 1987–88 season, he played in 30 matches. Werder Bremen won the national championship that year. It was their first league title in 23 years.

Hermann also helped Werder Bremen win the Cup Winners' Cup in 1992. He played in six matches during this winning journey. Even though he did not play in the final match, he was a key part of the team.

In December 1992, Hermann left Bremen. He had played 231 top-league matches for the club. He then joined SG Wattenscheid 09, another team in the top division. He helped them stay in the league.

He finished his playing career in the second division with Hannover 96. He retired when he was almost 36 years old.

Playing for Germany

Günter Hermann played two international matches for West Germany. His first game was on 21 September 1988. It was a friendly match against the Soviet Union in Düsseldorf. West Germany won 1–0.

His second match was on 30 May 1990. This was the final warm-up game before the 1990 FIFA World Cup. West Germany won 1–0 against Denmark.

During the 1990 World Cup, Hermann was part of the winning squad. He was one of only a few outfield players who did not play any minutes during the tournament. However, being part of a World Cup-winning team is a huge achievement for any player.
