Playing for Clubs
Günter Hermann spent nearly ten years playing professional football. Most of this time was with SV Werder Bremen. He played his first game in the Bundesliga, Germany's top football league, on December 11, 1982. This was a 2–1 win against VfL Bochum. However, he only played one game that season and one the next.
Becoming a Key Player
After a slow start, Hermann became a very important defensive player for Werder Bremen. He often played in the middle of the field with the famous player Miroslav Votava. In the 1987–88 season, he played in 30 matches. Werder Bremen won the national championship that year, their first in 23 years!
Later Career and Retirement
Even as he played less often, Günter Hermann was part of the team that won the Cup Winners' Cup in 1991–92. He played in six matches during that winning journey. In December 1992, he left Bremen after playing 231 top-league games.
He then joined another first-division team, SG Wattenscheid 09, helping them stay in the top league. He finished his playing career in the second division with Hannover 96. He retired when he was almost 36 years old. After retiring, he started managing amateur football teams, mainly with VSK Osterholz-Scharmbeck.
Playing for His Country
Günter Hermann played two international games for West Germany. His first game was on September 21, 1988, in a friendly match against the Soviet Union. West Germany won that game 1–0 in Düsseldorf.
His second game was just before the 1990 FIFA World Cup. He played for nine minutes in another 1–0 win against Denmark on May 30. During the World Cup, he was part of the winning squad. However, he was one of the few players who did not get to play any minutes in the competition.
