HMS Assurance was a special kind of warship called a 44-gun fifth rate frigate. It was part of the Royal Navy, which is the navy of the United Kingdom. This ship was built and launched in 1747. Sadly, it got into trouble and was wrecked in 1753.

The Assurance ran aground near a famous group of rocks called The Needles. These rocks are located off the coast of the Isle of Wight, England. Even though the ship was badly damaged and stuck, everyone on board was safe. The crew and passengers managed to escape from the ship before it was completely lost.

What Was HMS Assurance?

HMS Assurance was a medium-sized warship. It had 44 cannons, which were used to defend itself or attack other ships. A "frigate" was a fast and agile ship. Frigates were often used for scouting, protecting convoys, or raiding enemy ships. The Royal Navy used ships like the Assurance to protect Britain's interests around the world.

The Shipwreck of 1753

In 1753, the HMS Assurance was sailing near the Isle of Wight. For reasons that are not fully clear, the ship hit the dangerous rocks known as The Needles. The ship became stuck and was badly damaged. This event is called a shipwreck. Luckily, the ship stayed on the rocks long enough for everyone to get off safely. This was a fortunate outcome for such a serious accident.

Discovering the Wreck Site

Years later, the underwater remains of the Assurance were found. The shipwreck site is located near The Needles. It is believed to contain parts of two different ships, including the Assurance. This site is very important for history. Because of its historical value, it was made a "Protected Wreck" in 1974. This means it is protected by law. People cannot disturb the site without special permission.

What Was Found at the Site?

An Isle of Wight resident named Derek Williams first found the wreck site. Later, a researcher named John Bingeman studied old records. These records included accounts from a court martial. A court martial is like a trial for military members. These accounts helped confirm that the wreck happened in 1753, not 1738 as first thought. Divers have found cannons and other metal items from the ship at the site. These discoveries help us learn more about what life was like on a warship in the 1700s.
