Hackamore, once known as Jaquina, is a small, unincorporated community in Modoc County, California. It is located about 30 miles (48 km) west of Alturas. Hackamore sits high up, at an elevation of 4,705 feet (1,434 meters) above sea level, near the Southern Pacific Railroad.
A Look Back: Hackamore's Post Office
Hackamore had its own post office for a short time. It opened in 1903, after being moved from a nearby place called Stobie. However, the post office closed just one year later, in 1904.
The Civilian Conservation Corps in Hackamore
During the 1930s, Hackamore was home to a special camp. This camp was for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). The CCC was a program created during the Great Depression. It gave jobs to young men across the country.
The young men at the Hackamore camp did important work for the area. They built many miles of roads and telephone lines. They also helped map out the Lava Beds National Monument. This monument is a fascinating place with lava tubes and caves.
