Hadleigh Farm is a special place in Hadleigh, Essex. It's a working farm where you can learn about animals and nature. It's also famous for being a cross-country cycling spot. In August 2012, the farm hosted the exciting men's and women's mountain biking events for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

What is Hadleigh Farm?

Hadleigh Farm is owned by the Salvation Army. They run it as an educational farm. This means visitors can learn about farming and see different animals. The farm even has a rare breeds centre, which helps protect unusual types of farm animals. There is also a tea room for visitors to enjoy.

A Farm with a History

The Salvation Army bought the 700-acre (2.8 km2) farm in 1891. William Booth, who started the Salvation Army, had a plan. He wanted to help people who were struggling in London. The farm was part of his idea to give them a fresh start.

Location and Nearby Landmarks

Hadleigh Farm sits on a hill overlooking the Thames Estuary. This is where the River Thames meets the sea. Right next to the farm is Hadleigh Castle. This historic castle was built in the 1230s by King Henry III. It's one of the most important castles from the late Middle Ages in Essex. Today, English Heritage looks after it as a Grade I listed building.

Part of the mountain bike course also goes through Hadleigh Country Park. This park is managed by Essex County Council. It's a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its special invertebrates, which are creatures without backbones like insects.

Hadleigh Farm and the 2012 Olympics

Hadleigh Farm became famous worldwide in 2012. It was chosen to host the mountain biking competitions for the 2012 Summer Olympics.

Why Hadleigh Farm was Chosen

In 2008, Hadleigh Farm was confirmed as the Olympic venue. The first place suggested, Weald Country Park, wasn't challenging enough. The UCI, which is the world cycling body, loved Hadleigh Farm. They found its hills and terrain perfect for the tough Olympic race.

After the Olympic Games

For the Olympics, temporary grandstands were built. These could seat up to 3,000 people. After the games, the course was changed so everyone could use it. Now, there's a bike shop, a cafe, and a workshop. The farm also has better facilities for visitors. A new mountain bike club started at the farm. The course has even hosted big events like the British National Mountain Bike Championships.

Getting to Hadleigh Farm

To make it easier for people to get to the Olympics, some roads were improved. Castle Lane and Chapel Lane in Hadleigh were made wider. The farm is about 5 miles (8 km) from London Southend Airport. Hadleigh Farm is also near the London, Tilbury and Southend line railway. You can find it between Benfleet and Leigh-on-Sea railway stations.
