Hakim Syed Muhammad Karam Hussain (born 1870, died 1953) was a famous Unani doctor from Tijara, India. Unani is a traditional system of medicine that has been used for centuries. He was known for his medical skills and for helping his community.

A Life of Healing and Help

Learning to Heal

Hakim Syed Karam Husain started his education in his hometown of Tijara. When he was 14, he moved to Meerut. There, he learned about Unani medicine from two very skilled doctors: Hakim Mohammad Hasan Haziq and Hakim Baldev Sahai. Hakim Hasan Haziq wrote many books on Unani medicine. Hakim Baldev Sahai was a student of Hakim Ahsanullah Khan, who was a royal doctor for Emperor Bahadur Shah Zafar of Delhi.

Practicing Unani Medicine

Hakim Syed Karam Husain began his medical practice in Tijara around 1893. In 1894, he opened his own Unani medicine company called Dawakhana Shifaul Amraz. He became the personal Unani doctor for Maharaja Jai Singh Prabhakar of Alwar. He was also a member of a big committee for Unani and Ayurvedic medicine, which was led by another famous doctor, Hakim Ajmal Khan.

Maharaja Jai Singh Prabhakar once invited important Unani doctors from Alwar to talk about how to make Unani medicine better. Hakim Syed Karam Husain led this group of doctors.

A Respected Community Leader

Hakim Syed Karam Husain was known as Rais-e Tijara, which means 'Leader of Tijara'. He was a very religious and respected person. He lived in the Qazi Mohalla area of Tijara before India became independent in 1947. He owned several large houses in Tijara, including the oldest private mansion there. He also had two houses in Delhi. For fun, he enjoyed visiting Mount Abu and Delhi.

There is an old Persian writing at the entrance of his main house in Tijara. It talks about how great Emperor Akbar was and how he visited Tijara. This shows the long history of the area and the importance of Hakim Syed Karam Husain's family.

Helping the Community

Because he was a wealthy person in the Mewat region, Hakim Syed Karam Husain helped many community projects. He gave money or support to groups like 'Anjuman Khadimul Islam' in Alwar and 'Anjuman-e-Himayat-e-Islam' in Lahore. He also helped the 'Jamia Masjid' (Grand Mosque) and 'Madrasa Islamia' (Islamic School) in Tijara. He even helped Maulana Mohammad Ilyas, a famous religious scholar, on many occasions.

A stone plaque with Hakim Syed Karam Husain's name was found in a well at the Jamia Masjid. This plaque suggests that he helped build the main gate of the mosque. The mosque was damaged during the time of India's partition.

Thanks to Hakim Karam Husain's influence, Maharaja Jai Singh Prabhakar visited the 'Madrasa Islamia' school in Tijara. The Education Minister of Alwar, Raja Ghazanfar Ali Khan, also came along. A special message was written at the school's main gate, wishing the king well.

Hakim Syed Karam Husain also supported the printing of many books. These included books on Unani medicine and other literary works. He helped publish important medical texts like 'Tarjuma Qarabadin Azam'. He also helped print general books and even a copy of the Quran in 1889.

His Love for Poetry

Hakim Syed Karam Husain loved Urdu poetry. He even wrote many poems himself, using the pen name Natiq. He learned poetry from his teachers, Hakim Mohammad Hasan Haziq and Isharat Ali Khan Sadq Meeruti. He once said, "I am a student of Sadq in this art."

Family History

Hakim Syed Karam Husain was a direct descendant of Qazi Syed Rafi Mohammad. His father, Qazi Mir Imdad Ali, passed away when Hakim Syed Karam Husain was only eight years old. His mother, Fayyazun Nisan, was a very talented woman who guided him. She learned many good qualities from her father, Hussainuddin, who was a horse trader from Hyderabad and loved literature.

In January 1934, Hakim Syed Karam Husain went on the Hajj pilgrimage from Tijara. He traveled with his wife, sister, elder son, and other family members and friends.
