Halifax boardwalk
Boardwalk on Halifax waterfront

The Halifax Waterfront Boardwalk is a cool walking path right on the Halifax Harbour in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. It's a great place to explore the city's waterfront!

This boardwalk is made from strong wood and is open all day, every day. Along the way, you'll find fun shops at places like Bishop's Landing and the Historic Properties. There's also the "Cable Wharf", which used to be a place where special ships that laid underwater cables would dock. Now, it's a spot for tour boats, including the famous Theodore Too tugboat! For over a hundred years, many tugboats worked from wharves near Salter Street. These powerful boats helped big ships move around the harbour. Later, special pilot boats, which help guide ships into port, were also based here. But now, these working boats have moved to other parts of the harbour, and their old spots are being turned into new public areas for everyone to enjoy.

The boardwalk starts down south at the Halifax Seaport. It stretches north along the coast for about 3 kilometers (that's almost 2 miles!) and ends near Casino Nova Scotia. Along this path, you can visit three interesting museums. The Pier 21 museum, which tells the story of immigrants coming to Canada, is at the very south end. In the middle of the boardwalk, you'll find the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic. This museum has lots of cool things about ships and the ocean, including a real museum ship called CSS Acadia. Just a bit south of the Acadia is where another museum ship, HMCS Sackville, stays during the summer.

A special group called the Waterfront Development Corporation Limited helps manage and take care of the boardwalk. They work to make sure it's a fun and safe place for everyone.

Here are some of the cool spots you can find along the boardwalk, going from north to south:

  • Casino Nova Scotia: A big building where adults can play games.
  • Historic Properties (Halifax): Old, beautiful stone buildings that now have shops and restaurants.
  • Water Street Ferry Terminal: This is where you can catch a ferry boat to Dartmouth. It's a fun ride across the harbour!
  • Theodore Tugboat: You might see a real-life version of the famous TV show tugboat here!
  • Murphy's on the Water and the Cable Wharf: A popular spot with restaurants and where tour boats often leave from.
  • CSS Acadia: A historic ship that's part of the Maritime Museum.
  • Maritime Museum of the Atlantic: A museum full of amazing stories and artifacts about the ocean, ships, and Nova Scotia's sea history.
  • HMCS Sackville: A real Canadian Navy ship that you can visit during the warmer months. It's Canada's Naval Memorial.
  • Bishop's Landing (Halifax): A nice area with shops, restaurants, and places to live.
  • Halifax Seaport: A busy area at the south end of the boardwalk.
    • Halifax Farmers' Market: A great place to find local food, crafts, and more.
    • Cruise ship terminal: Where huge cruise ships dock when they visit Halifax.
    • Pier 21: Canada's national museum about immigration. You can learn about the millions of people who came to Canada through this very spot.

What's Coming Next?

There are still some empty spots along the waterfront, but new and exciting things are being built! For example, the Queen's Landing project is under construction. It will add new buildings and spaces between the Ferry Terminal and the Maritime Museum. Other plans include new parks, a special winter garden, a hotel, and more shops and homes. These projects will make the Halifax Waterfront even more amazing for everyone to enjoy!
