Halit Refiğ (born March 5, 1934 – died October 11, 2009) was a famous Turkish film director, film producer, screenwriter, and writer. He created about sixty films. These included full-length movies, documentaries, and TV serials.
Many people see him as a leader in the "National Cinema" movement in Turkey. He also helped start the production of TV shows in the country.

Biography
Halit Refiğ finished high school in 1951. He then studied engineering at Robert College in Istanbul.
Early Career
Refiğ directed his first films using 8mm cameras. He did this while serving as a military officer in Korea, Japan, and Ceylon. In 1956, he started writing articles about movies for newspapers. He also launched a magazine called Sinema Dergisi with Nijat Özön.
He began his professional film career in 1957. He worked as an assistant to Atıf Yılmaz. He also wrote scripts for Atıf Yılmaz and Memduh Ün. His first movie as a director was Forbidden Love (Yasak Aşk) in 1961. His 1962 film, Stranger in the City, was shown at the 3rd Moscow International Film Festival.
Work in Television
In the 1970s, Turkish cinema faced some challenges. Because of this, Halit Refiğ started working a lot more for television. In 1974, he became an instructor. He taught at the first cinema education programs in Istanbul. These programs were at the Istanbul State Fine Arts Academy. Today, this school is known as the Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts. He became a lecturer there in 1975.
In 1975, he directed the TV series Aşk-ı Memnu (Forbidden Love). This show was aired on the Turkish Radio Television, TRT. It is thought to be the first miniseries ever shown on Turkish TV. In 1978, he wrote a script for a documentary. It was about the life of Mimar Sinan, a famous architect. The project was not finished, but the script was published.
In 1999, he started working on a new movie project. It was called Devlet Ana (Mother State). The film was meant to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the Ottoman Empire. This project was planned with Mimar Sinan University. However, in 2001, Refiğ decided not to work with the university. So, the movie was never made.
Academic Life
Halit Refiğ also taught film at universities. In 1976, he lectured at the University of Wisconsin in the United States. While there, he directed a film called The Intercessors. In 1984, he taught at Denison University in Ohio. He made the film In the Wilderness with his students. In 1997, Marmara University gave him the title of "Honorary Professor."
Death
Halit Refiğ passed away on October 11, 2009, in Istanbul. He was 75 years old. He had been suffering from a type of cancer called cholangiocarcinoma. He was buried two days later at the Zincirlikuyu Cemetery. His funeral service was held at Teşvikiye Mosque.
