Marmara University (in Turkish: Marmara Üniversitesi) is a big public university in Istanbul, Turkey. It's named after the Sea of Marmara. While it became a university in 1982, its story actually began much earlier in 1883. Back then, it was a school called Hamidiye Ticaret Mekteb-i Âlisi in a house in central Istanbul.
What makes Marmara University special is that it teaches in five different languages! These are Turkish, English, German, French, and Arabic. This makes it the only university in Turkey that teaches in so many languages. The university has many different campuses, schools, and research centers. Some famous people who studied here include the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the funny actor Kemal Sunal.

About Marmara University
Marmara University has many campuses spread across Istanbul. It offers classes in five languages: Turkish, English, German, French, and Arabic. The university has about 2,839 teachers and around 57,000 students. This includes about 44,661 students studying for their first degree and 7,406 students doing advanced studies.
There are also 1,354 international students from 73 different countries. More than half of the students, about 54%, are girls. The university even has its own TV and radio stations, Marmara University TV and Radio Marmara. One of its 12 campuses is a hospital, helping people in Istanbul.

Sports and Activities
Marmara University encourages students and staff to be active and healthy. They offer many sports and fun activities. You can play basketball, volleyball, chess, or table tennis. There are also classes for dancing, fitness, and even mountaineering.
At the Göztepe Campus, there's a large sports hall for games and events. It can hold 850 people and even more if needed. This campus also has smaller halls, classrooms, a fitness center, and a billiards room. Outside, there are courts for tennis, volleyball, and basketball.
Students can join school teams for volleyball, basketball, and soccer. They also have tournaments for chess and table tennis. The Anadoluhisarı Campus has another sports hall, indoor and outdoor sports areas, and even an indoor Olympic swimming pool! There's also a mini golf course and a place for boating.
Global Connections
Marmara University is very active on the international stage. It hosts and takes part in many scientific meetings, cultural events, art shows, and sports competitions. The university is a member of the European University Association (EUA), which connects universities across Europe.
Many departments at the university have exchange programs with other universities. These programs, like Erasmus and Socrates, let students and teachers study or work in different countries. For example, law students often join international mock court competitions. Students also take part in Model United Nations programs, where they pretend to be diplomats from different countries.
The university has strong connections with many European universities. This helps students and researchers get lots of new opportunities. The International Office and a student group called ESN Marmara help foreign students feel welcome. Every year, the Management Club organizes an 'International Week' to celebrate the international community at Marmara University.
Erasmus Program Success
Between 2003 and 2010, Marmara University sent 1,097 students to study abroad through the Erasmus Programme. These students had the chance to study for one or two terms in one of 230 partner universities in 22 European countries. Most of these students were studying for their first degree or advanced degrees. A small number also did internships abroad. The university and the European Commission helped these students with money during their time abroad.
Marmara University is one of the top three choices for foreign students who want to study in Turkey through exchange programs. Since 2006, the university has offered free Turkish language courses for foreign students. Because of this program, the university won the European Language Label award from the European Commission.

In 2018, Marmara University was ranked among the top universities in the world by Times Higher Education. It was placed in the 801-1000 range globally.
