Marmara University (in Turkish: Marmara Üniversitesi) is a big public university in Istanbul, Turkey. A public university means it gets money from the government.
The university is named after the Sea of Marmara. It officially became a university in 1982. But its history goes back to 1883. Back then, it was called Hamidiye Ticaret Mekteb-i Âlisi. It started in a house in the center of Istanbul.
Marmara University is special because it teaches in five languages. These are Turkish, English, German, French, and Arabic. This makes it the only university in Turkey that teaches in so many languages.
The university has many different parts. It has 13 campuses, 11 institutes, 8 colleges, and 28 research centers. Many famous people have studied here. These include the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and the funny actor Kemal Sunal.

Learning at Marmara University
Marmara University has over 3,000 teachers and professors. About 60,000 students study across its campuses in Istanbul. For more than 124 years, it has been a top school in Turkey.
The university has grown a lot, especially in areas like Engineering, Medicine, and Dentistry. These subjects are taught in Turkish and English. The Faculty of Economics and Administrative Sciences teaches in five languages. This makes Marmara University unique in Turkey.
The university is very good in Medicine, Law, and Fine Arts. It helps students learn to think for themselves. It also teaches them to be part of a democratic society.
Marmara University has 2,839 teachers and researchers. It also has 1,354 people who help with running the university.

Working with Other Countries
Marmara University is a modern university that works with schools around the world. It takes part in many international events. These include science meetings, cultural activities, art shows, and sports.
Marmara University is a member of the European University Association (EUA). This means it connects with other universities in Europe. Some of its engineering and technical education programs are also approved by ABET. ABET is a group that checks the quality of college programs.

Erasmus Program Success
Between 2003 and 2010, Marmara University sent 1,097 students abroad. These students studied for 1-2 terms in 230 partner universities. These universities were in 22 different European countries. Most students (95%) went for regular study programs. The rest (5%) went for internships.
The university and the European Commission helped these students with money. Marmara University is one of the top choices for foreign students coming to Turkey. This is for exchange programs.
Since 2006, Marmara University has offered free Turkish language courses for foreign students. Because of this program, the university won the European Language Label award. This award comes from the European Commission.

Sports and Fun Activities
Marmara University offers many sports and fun activities for students and staff. You can play basketball, volleyball, chess, and table tennis. There are also classes for dancing, fitness, and even mountaineering.
At the Göztepe Campus, there is a large sports hall. It can hold 850 people and can be made bigger for 2000 people. There are also smaller halls, classrooms, a fitness center, and a billiards room. Outside, you can find courts for tennis, volleyball, and basketball.
Students are encouraged to join school teams. They can play volleyball, basketball, and soccer. There are also tournaments for chess and table tennis.
The Anadoluhisarı Campus has a sports hall and areas for indoor and outdoor sports. You can play tennis, volleyball, and football. There are also places for gymnastics, fitness, and wrestling. This campus even has an indoor Olympic swimming pool, a mini golf course, and a place for boats.
