The Hall of Justice in Los Angeles is a famous building located in the heart of Downtown Los Angeles. It stands at 211 W. Temple Street in the Civic Center area. This important building was completed in 1925.

It was one of the first large buildings that helped shape the modern Civic Center. Over the years, this area became home to many landmark government buildings.

What is the Hall of Justice?

The Hall of Justice was once the main center for the Los Angeles County justice system. It housed many important offices. These included the Los Angeles County courts and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office. It was also home to the District Attorney's Office. For many years, it even served as the main Los Angeles County Jail.

Building Design and Architects

The Hall of Justice was designed in the beautiful Beaux-Arts style. This style is known for its grand and classic look. The building was created by the Allied Architects Association. This group was formed in 1921 by several talented architects in Los Angeles. They worked together to design public buildings.

Who Designed the Hall of Justice?

Many skilled architects were part of the Allied Architects Association. Some of these included Octavius Morgan and Reginald Davis Johnson. Other notable names were George Edwin Bergstrom and Myron Hunt. These architects helped create the Hall of Justice's impressive design.

Hall of Justice in Pop Culture

This historic building has appeared in many television shows. Its classic look made it a popular filming location. You might have seen it in old shows like Dragnet and Perry Mason. It was also featured in the comedy show Get Smart. The building even appeared in the 1997 movie Absolute Power. In the movie, it was shown as the police headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Restoration and Reopening

The Hall of Justice faced a big challenge in 1994. It was damaged during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Because of the damage, the building had to be closed down.

However, the story didn't end there! The building underwent a full restoration and upgrade. This included making it much stronger against future earthquakes. This big project was completed by a team including Clark Construction and AC Martin Architects. In 2015, the Hall of Justice proudly reopened its doors. Today, the offices of the Los Angeles County Sheriff and the District Attorney are back in the building.
