A Look at Halleck's Past
How Halleck Got Its Name
The community of Halleck is named after Camp Halleck. This camp was set up by the U.S. Army on July 26, 1867. Its main job was to protect people traveling on the California Trail. It also protected workers building the Central Pacific Railroad. The camp was named after Major General Henry Wager Halleck. It was known as Camp Halleck until 1879, when it became Fort Halleck. The fort closed in 1886.
Early Days of the Town
The town of Halleck started in 1869. This was when the Central Pacific Railroad finished building its tracks through the area. Halleck quickly became an important spot for shipping supplies to Fort Halleck.
In 1869, the town already had two hotels and one saloon. The saloon was a popular place for soldiers from Fort Halleck to visit. A store and a school opened in 1874. The school stayed open for a long time, finally closing in the 1950s.
Growth and Change
By 1875, about 50 people lived in Halleck. This number grew to 126 by 1900. At that time, Halleck had 26 buildings and many busy businesses.
However, when Fort Halleck closed in 1886, the town had to find new ways to survive. It began to depend on ranching and the ranchers who lived nearby. Over time, smaller ranches were bought by bigger companies. This caused the town to slowly shrink. Today, the Halleck post office is one of only two buildings left in the town. It still serves the many ranches in the area.
