Halltown is a small, unincorporated community located in Jefferson County, West Virginia. This means it's a group of homes and businesses that isn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Halltown is found along Flowing Springs Run.

You can find Halltown off U.S. Route 340 on West Virginia Route 230. It's situated between the towns of Charles Town and Bolivar. A big part of Halltown's history is the Halltown Paperboard Mill, which has been making paper products there since 1869.

The Story of Halltown

The community of Halltown got its name from the Hall family. They owned a large farm very close to where the community is today.

Mail Delivery Changes

In October 1896, Halltown became famous for something new. It was one of only three places in the entire United States to start a special mail service. This service was called Rural Free Delivery (RFD).

Before RFD, people living in the countryside had to travel to a post office to pick up their mail. But with RFD, mail carriers began delivering letters and packages directly to people's homes. This made life much easier for families in rural areas. The other two places that started RFD at the same time were Charles Town and Uvilla, both also in West Virginia.
