Hamburg is a small, unincorporated community located in Ray Township, within Franklin County, Indiana. An unincorporated community means it's a place where people live together, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.

History of Hamburg, Indiana
Founding and Naming the Community
Hamburg was officially planned and laid out in 1864 by a person named Wesley Martin. He decided to name the community after the famous city of Hamburg in Germany.
Community Life and St. Ann's Church
For many years, Hamburg was known as a strong Catholic community. St. Ann's Catholic Church was built here in 1869. This church was an important part of the town for a long time. In 2013, St. Ann's Church closed its doors. Its members joined another church, Holy Family Parish, in nearby Oldenburg.
Hamburg's Post Office Service
Hamburg also had its own post office. It opened in 1867. People used it to send and receive mail for many years. The post office closed down in 1929.
The 1974 Tornado Event
On April 3, 1974, a very strong tornado hit Hamburg. This tornado was part of a much larger event called the 1974 Super Outbreak, where many tornadoes struck different areas. The tornado that hit Hamburg caused a lot of damage. It destroyed about 90% of the town's buildings.
