Hamish Wilson (born December 13, 1942 – died March 26, 2020) was a Scottish actor. He was from Glasgow, Scotland. People remember him best for a short time he played Jamie McCrimmon. This was in the 1968 Doctor Who story called The Mind Robber.
Playing Jamie McCrimmon
Hamish Wilson stepped in to play Jamie McCrimmon for part of two episodes. The usual actor, Frazer Hines, was sick with chickenpox. He could not film his scenes. The show's writers made this part of the story. In the show, Jamie's face was changed. The Second Doctor tried to fix it. His first try was not successful. Hamish Wilson played Jamie during this time. When Frazer Hines got better, Jamie's real face was restored in the story.
Early Life and Acting Career
Hamish Wilson learned acting at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. This is a famous school in Scotland. One of his first TV jobs was in a show called The Vital Spark in 1966.
When he appeared in Doctor Who, he was working in London. He helped move furniture for a living. He also acted in other TV shows. These included Softly, Softly and Monarch of the Glen. He also acted in the film Greyfriars Bobby (1961). Later, he was in a film called TimeLock (2013).
Radio Work
In the 1970s, Hamish Wilson started a new career. He became a continuity announcer for STV in Glasgow. This meant he introduced shows and told viewers what was coming next.
After that, he became a radio producer. He worked for radio stations like Radio Forth and Radio Clyde. In 1989, he joined the BBC's Scottish radio drama unit. There, he made radio shows for BBC Radio Scotland. He also produced programs for BBC Radio 3 and BBC Radio 4. In 1996, he received a special award from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He also taught at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
Death
Hamish Wilson died on March 26, 2020. He was 77 years old. He passed away from COVID-19 in a hospital. This was near his home in Bladnoch, Scotland. He died during the COVID-19 pandemic in Scotland. He was survived by his wife, Diana, and his three daughters, Emma, Abigail, and Alice.
